Bury Dementia Action Alliance

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Working with the public means we have a role to play in enabling people with dementia to live in a supportive environment where they feel valued and understood and have a sense of belonging and of being a valued part of everyday life.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

  • Time and capacity due to business commitments
  • Lack of knowledge amongst staff of dementia and how to support those with it.

2. Actions

  • Active promotion to make Bury dementia friendly

By joining the Bury Dementia Action Alliance, we hope to demonstrate a positive and enabling attitude to people with dementia, including the active promotion of helping to make Bury become more dementia friendly.

  • Dementia Champion

Nominate a member of our team (Natalie Lomax) who will become our organisation’s Dementia Champion and act as a resource for other colleagues within the organisation.

  • Dementia Awareness

We intend for all staff to become more dementia aware by attending a dementia awareness session on our premises on a Monday (Non-trading day).

  • Top tips for customer facing staff

We intend to educate all staff in the ‘top tips for customer facing staff’ list of tips to help us to deliver better customer service to people with dementia using the material provided from the Alzheimer’s Society .

  • promotion of Bury DAA events

We plan to promote Bury DAA and dementia awareness events through our networks, social media and facilities.

  • Host events

We plan to host events and/or services in our facilities for the benefit of local people living with dementia and/or carers as well as helping to assist other organisations with fundraising, i.e. through attending events and donating raffle prizes.

  • Signposting

We plan to supply information in our shop/service to signpost people affected by dementia to local support services via displaying posters/leaflets.
