1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Melton Borough Council we will strive to support those living with dementia and support the carer to feel empowered by;

  •  Working towards dementia friendly communities by promoting Dementia Friends session in order to increase awareness of the disease and reduce stigma.
  • Recognising the diversity of organisations needed to support people with dementia and their carers in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and identifying future work, sharing of resources and working in partnership by through the Leicestershire DAA, Senior Forum and other partnership groups encourage conversations and information sharing so that we may offer support and deliver collaborative projects.
  • Sharing of information amongst members by looking into a dedicated webpage on our website promoting services, activities, support groups and information links for the carer, family members.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Increase awareness of dementia throughout the Borough, particularly in the rural areas and with the business community.

  • Be able to provide and deliver dementia information sessions and training sessions in a sustainable manner to reach more staff, partners, businesses and the community.
  • To secure funds/resources that benefit the carer and the dementia suffer.
  • Working in partnership with all relevant agencies and commissioning bodies to offer an efficient, effective and coordinated service that meets the needs of the individual, carer, family and wider community.
  • To develop and maintain a strong open joint working relationship with the Leicestershire DAA partners and our local partnerships.

    Following organisations working together to create general awareness of the disease: Alzheimer’s Society, MBC, Age UK, Latham House, Adult Social Care, DWP, RVS (formerly WRVS), VAL.

  • Dementia Awareness Event

    Hold an event in Melton at Parkside to promote all the services available. Put on a Dementia Friends session.

    The event went well and the Alzheimer’s Society had received some referrals from the event. The event was also positive in that it got all services together. Positive feedback was received from the Council’s Chief Executive who is keen for all staff to go on the Dementia Friends session.

    Further Carers Information and Support Programme to be held at Melton Borough Council offices this September.

    A successful Carers Information and Support Programme was held in Melton, run by the Alzheimers Society, with around 9 people attending.

    New member. Alzheimer Society has offered to hold the last funded CRISP session in Melton. Date confirmed March 17th, 24th 31 and April 7th 2014.

    UPDATE: All partners supported Dementia week through, sharing information regarding the support available to individuals living with dementia and their carers.  In addition promoted the event 6 th  June 2014

    We held two Dementia Friend Information Sessions, in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Society, which were both well attended by council staff, members of thepublic and local businesses. Around 25 people attended in total. 

    2014 - Fourth Quarter Update

    Contacted the Keep Safe Places Schemes in Melton. Since contacting these places there has been no uptake. 4 DFIS were run in May at Melton Borough Council Offices.

    Will endeavour to hold more sessions in the new year.
