1. Action Plan
1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?
As one of the largest private hire companies in York, several of our regular customers are affected by dementia. We are also the main taxi provider for the York NHS Foundation Trust and as such do carry passengers for them with this condition. Our aim is to provide all our drivers and staff with the training required to support local people affected by dementia to enable them to have access to the transport required to enable them to live an independent life.
2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?
Our main challenge to deliver these outcomes is to ensure that drivers and staff are trained to be aware of the needs and requirements of people with dementia. We need to put any processes in place to make sure this happens and to make sure the training is available to all new drivers and office staff within the Company. We would also look at our booking procedures, along with our software provider, to see if there are any adaptations that could be made within the system to provide dementia sufferers with a better service.
Ensure our induction procedure for new drivers and office staff includes training on dealing with customers affected by dementia.
- Planning, Delivery
2019 - Second Quarter Update
Two key memebers of staff to attend Dementia Champion Training to allow them to continue training new members of staff.
Ensure our induction procedure for new drivers and office staff includes training on dealing with customers affected by dementia and, if numbers allow, ask Dementia Forward to provide another awareness session.
Booking and Delivery Processes
In conjunction with our system provider we will look at the booking procedures to see if there are ways we can make them easier and more accessible to people living with dementia. As we have some regular customers that are affected we will be looking at ways to provide the office staff and drivers with any information on particular needs or support required by an individual.
2019 - Second Quarter Update
Notes are added to all jobs where customers are known to have dementia. This ensures that the driver goes to the door to collect them and takes them into the venue they are going to. If the customer doesn't answer the door, drivers are asked to contact the office.
We already have Accounts opened by carers for a person with dementia to alleviate the necessity of them paying cash when travelling, we would make every effort to make carers aware this service. We also operate a discount scheme with York Carers, so we would inform carers of this and put them in touch with York Carers if they are not already aware of the service.
