Home Instead Senior Care Worcester

Home Instead Senior Care Worcester provides support to enable adults and older people to retain their independence and remain living in their own homes for as long as possible. We provide a range of services for individuals including companionship, home-help and personal care to assist and support people to live as independently as possible in the place they feel most comfortable and secure, at home. Our main role is to deliver quality home care to allow people to remain living independently in their own home. Our support is tailored to suit the needs of the client as an individual’s situation changes and is flexible so that it can change with the clients’ changing requirements. We specialise in Dementia care and train our Caregivers to City and Guilds standards in this area of their work.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Wherever possible our clients have personal choice and control over decisions and we ensure that at all times we communicate effectively with the client and their family about their support, health and well-being.  We believe that we can only deliver the right care if we build a relationship with our clients so we aim to support clients with the same regular CAREGivers whom spend a minimum of one hour at each visit and are matched to the clients with the same hobbies and interests.

We achieve this by ensuring our CAREGivers and staff are trained to the highest possible standard which is refreshed regularly.

We support our clients to maintain and grow their social links within the local community. And our CAREGivers are happy to accompany their clients to groups and community events as well as maintaining access to friends via the phone.

Implemented by our Dementia Champion, our CAREGivers are participating in Home Instead’s City & Guilds accredited training which gives valuable information to help understand and care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Awareness training is also available to clients’ families and friends to help them in supporting their loved one.

2.  What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Our biggest challenge is the speed at which we can deliver our City & Guilds accredited dementia training to  our CAREGivers .

The training takes place over three modules with work experience in between the classroom training. Therefore, it can take 2 to 3 months for a CAREGiver to be fully trained. The cost of delivering the training is not insignificant and this is another challenge. Publicising the availability of our Family and Friends Dementia awareness courses is also time consuming and costly.

Another challenge we face is that we are often excluded from local authority provider lists and Framework Agreements as we tend not enter in to local authority block contracts as we believe they drive down the quality of care, and communication with Public Sector employees and some in the 3rd sector can be difficult as a result. This is a barrier to families who we may be in a position to support.

Recruitment and retention of good quality staff is a challenge. More needs to be done to promote the benefits and rewards of a career in care.

2. Actions

  • Increase the speed and completion levels of City and Guilds specialist training for our Caregivers.

    Employ extra training resource, free up facilities and re-rota staff to ensure through-put on Dementia training is increased.

    Commit extra spend to cover costs of training another trainer and to hire outside facilities for training courses to be completed in.

    Ensure all new Caregivers recruited have commenced City and Guilds course within 12 weeks after succesful conclusion of probation.

  • Publicising and increasing attendance at Dementia Family and Friends workshops.

    To combine  increased paid advertising/marketing and network based promotion of our Dementia Workshops.

    To hold them in accessible and appealing town centre venues.

    Communicate availability to new potential attendees in public sector and retail roles through networking contact.

  • Inform Local Authority/ Public Sector of our Dementia Care capabilities

    Network to explain our care capabilities and training further, ensuring Public Sector fund holders , Care co-ordinators in public services and 3rd sector organisations are aware of the specialist care we offer for clients with Dementia.

    Scope possibilities of accepting limited work flow from Local Authority to demonstrate capabilities and try to influence better levels of care for those with Dementia.

    Use our connections with bodies such as Age UK to try and influence improvements for clients with Dementia in £rd sector operations such as Home from Hospital service.

    Work with our partners at Arden Commissioning and  their 3 funding CCGs to influence improvements in Domiciliary palliative care for those with Dementia.

  • Improve recruitment of Caregivers

    Re-evaluate our communications  and recruitment screening to recruit Caregivers  who are empathetic  and effective Carers for those with Dementia as the key focus. Improve use of networking talks in community groups and our use of Social media to explain the rewards of a career in care, particularly looking after those with Dementia.
