1. Action Plan
1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?
We have longstanding experience of advising people with dementia and their families, not only through Ridley & Hall but also through our specialist service for elderly clients www.elderfloweradvice.co.uk. Our wills and probate team is very highly regarded (Legal 500 recommended).
Our professional services include powers of attorney, wills, house sales and purchases, asset protection trusts, and handling inheritance disputes. We are able to offer specialist advice on obtaining statutory wills for people who lack capacity to make their own will. We can also advise on applications to the Court of Protection where individuals are no longer able to manage their own financial affairs.
Twenty members of our staff have participated in Dementia Friends information sessions to raise their awareness of the challenges faced by people whose lives are affected by dementia. We give regular talks to community groups to raise awareness of the importance of having suitable up to date wills and powers of attorney.
We have links with a number of relevant charitable organisations including strong links with the Alzheimer’s Society. Our managing partner is chair of the Kirklees Dementia Action Alliance.
2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?
One challenge we face is that our offices are in a listed building where disabled access is less than ideal. To overcome this, we offer home visits where possible.
We need to ensure that all of our staff are involved in improving how we communicate with, meet and advise people whose lives are affected by dementia.
We aim to deliver Dementia Friends information sessions for more of our staff, and have two in-house Dementia Friends Champions. We also intend to source more in-depth training for those members of staff whose work brings them into contact most regularly with clients affected by dementia.
Audit the office environment
Review the office environment from the point of view of someone with dementia, and make improvements where possible.
Install signs throughout the office make it easier for people to navigate around the building.

Ensure business cards used by our wills and probate team are in large font and include a photo of the relevant member of staff.
Staff training and engagement
Arrange Dementia Friends training for more of our staff, with a view ultimately to having an in-house Dementia Champion.
Arrange in-depth training from the SCIE Open Dementia Programme for those members of staff whose work brings them into contact most regularly with clients affected by dementia.
