Electric Palace Harwich

The Electric Palace in Harwich is one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas in the UK, originally built in 1911. It was restored in 1981 and has been a volunteer-led community cinema ever since, showing films every weekend along with special live and music events. We have recently undertaken a major refurbishment project, supported by Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, projecting our heritage so that it can be enjoyed by present and future generations.

Tendring Dementia Action Alliance

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We believe that a trip to the cinema offers a powerful way for people to reconnect with memories. We want to offer people living with dementia the chance to see classic films in our historic building with their family, friends and carers. We are creating an environment where people with dementia can meet and socialise and where they are understood, respected and supported. Our trained volunteers will be on hand throughout the screenings.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Restrictions to adaptations because of the age and historic status of the building

2. Actions

  • Dementia Friends

All of the staff and volunteers for our Dementia Friendly screenings will attend a Dementia Friends awareness session.

  • Dementia Friendly screenings

We plan to offer Dementia Friendly Screenings at the cinema in 2022.

  • Environment

We plan to make our cinema as dementia friendly as possible, particularly for our Dementia Friendly screenings and have been working with the TDAA to identify ways in which we can do this.

  • Focus group

We plan to work with Age Concern Colchester's Harwich Dementia Cafe to create a focus group who can help us to understand the requirements of our audience and inform the content of our Dementia Friendly screenings.

  • Reminiscence

We will be delivering a reminiscence session for the Harwich Dementia Cafe. The Electric Palace has been in the town for many years and we hope to evoke memories from those people who have attended the cinema (or others) that they can share with one another.
