The Makers’ Shelf

The Makers' Shelf is an independent gift shop in Newmarket Suffolk. We sell high quality handmade products by UK designers. The store opened in June 2018 after years of dreaming and planning. We aim to provide a unique gift experience. Supported by the recent Google review comment - “Such a unique store with a great range of cards, gifts and treats for yourself. Lovely staff who are passionate about the makers behind the products.”

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

The aim of The Makers’ Shelf is to support people living with dementia to have a sense of belonging and being a valued part of family and community life by providing a safe and supported shopping environment. 

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Making sure that we have a good understanding of the issues surrounding people living with Dementia, so that we do not make assumptions.

  • Improve our understanding of Dementia

    To be dementia aware, to ensure we have greater understanding of the condition and how we can help.

  • Work in partnership with Newmarket DAA

    The Makers’ Shelf will work with the Newmarket Dementia Action Alliance to support Newmarket to become a dementia friendly community and encourage other organisations to attend Dementia Friends sessions and sign up to the Newmarket Dementia Action Alliance.

  • Promoting dementia awareness

    The Makers’ Shelf will display the NDAA supporter and the Dementia Friendly window stickers, to demonstrate it is a dementia friendly retailer.
