Dementia Friendly Southampton (Southampton DAA)

Southampton Dementia Action Alliance consists of professionals and individuals passionate about making the city of Southampton a more dementia friendly place to live and visit.

A Scrutiny Inquiry Panel in 2015/16 found that although Southampton had made great progress in becoming more dementia friendly, there was still more work to be done. Therefore, Southampton Dementia Action Alliance was set up in December 2016 as part of the Dementia Friendly Southampton project, funded by Southampton City Council and successfully bid for by the Alzheimer’s Society, to help steer the city to become more dementia friendly.

To build on the many successes of the project since December 2016, and in order to continue to support the dementia friendly communities work in the city, Southampton City Council and Southampton City Clinical Commissioning Group (health) have extended the funding for a further 12 months. This will ensure that there continues to be a co-ordinated approach to the delivery of the DAA aims and action plan, along with providing support to existing and newly emerging dementia friendly communities.

Aims

  • To raise awareness of dementia and help to reduce associated stigmas across the city.
  • To support businesses and organisations city-wide to become more dementia friendly.
  • To help create and support Dementia Friendly Communities in different areas of Southampton.
  • To contribute towards making Southampton a recognised Dementia Friendly City.

Action Plan of Southampton Dementia Action Alliance 2018-2019

  • Dementia Friend information sessions to be offered throughout the city to businesses, organisations and community groups.
  • Transportation throughout the city to become more dementia friendly. Southampton Dementia Action Alliance will aim to contribute towards Southampton Transport Review that is underway to ensure the needs of people with dementia, and their carers are considered.
  • Explore opportunities for high quality information about the dementia journey alongside local information about service, support groups and care pathways being made available to people living with dementia, their families and carers.
  • This plan may change and develop as the Dementia Action Alliance grows.

Dementia Friendly Communities

A Dementia Friendly Community is ‘a city, town or village where people with dementia are understood, respected and supported, and confident they can contribute to community life. In a dementia friendly community people will be aware of and understand dementia, and people with dementia will feel included and involved, and have choice and control over their day-to-day lives.’

If you would like to be part of this initiative and support the creation of a Dementia Friendly Community in your area, please contact us and we would be happy to help and support you in this process.
