Achievements

Registered as a Dementia Friendly Community. Dementia friends sessions held locally, and the production of local information leaflets

West Moors Dementia Action Group

Following the launch of the Prime Minister's Dementia Challenge in 2012, there has been a commitment to develop Dementia Friendly Communities across the UK.

Here in West Moors, we began the process by forming an Action Group and had our initial meeting on 23 February 2015.  West Moors is a semi-rural village with just over 7,200 residents; approximately 42% of these are over 60 years; against a Dorset average of 30% and 17% nationally.  Also, there are 12% more females than males; these factors greatly increase the possibility of Dementia occurring in our community.

The centre of the community is Station Road, 'our High Street'; which consists of a range of privately owned shops and a couple of national chains providing smaller local supermarkets.  Additionally there are a range of schools, churches, GP surgeries and a large number of voluntary comprehensive groups within the village boundary.

 Aims and Objectives

We wish to improve the lives of those living with dementia and their carer's by addressing the key priorities, which have been identified at a national level.

  •  we will work to raise awareness of dementia in our community
  • work with residents and other agencies to promote this common aim by organising activities and education, including local dementia friends sessions
  • ensure that our Action Group continues to publicise and support those living with dementia and their carer's in the community
  • promote and encourage local businesses that actively support and demonstrate that those with dementia feel welcome and safe in their community
  • sign up to the National Dementia Declaration

The meetings are chaired on a rotation basis with the main contact as Angela  Sleet

Our achievements include:

  • the production of local information leaflets with guidance from the Alzheimer's Society
  • dementia friends sessions held locally; in the library, churches, a session with the Brownies and a nursing home
  • promotion and publicity widely circulated, with unrestricted access to meeting notes
  • use of local papers and magazines
  • the setting up of a community bank account; with funds and support received from West Moors Parish Council and Sturts Farm

Also, a range of activities arranged for Dementia Awareness Week from 16 May 2016.

 Action Group

This group will continue to meet bi-monthly to monitor progress and continue to keep West Moors updated on progress.  Meeting notes will continue to be circulated widely and published on the West Moors Parish Council website.
