Ferndown Dementia Friendly Community

Registered as a Dementia Friendly Community. We have formed close liaisons with local dementia care homes, the leisure centre, POPPs, Alzhiemers Society and the local church

Ferndown Town Council was approached by Dawn Jones, POPP Champion, Ferndown and West Parley to become more aware of dementia in the population. As a result three Councillors volunteered to set up a steering group unsupported by the Council

Ferndown Dementia Friendly Community was formed in December 2014 and to date have met 10 times. Meetings are held approximately every 6 – 8 weeks at various venues.

Initial consultation with the local Memory Café has taken place to identify some of the barriers to feeling included in the community

Actions have been agreed and drafted onto the national DAA action plan template ready for submission.

We have received grants to create a working fund and have set up a dedicated Bank account.  We have advertised the Ferndown Memory Café in the local press and paid for a permanent banner outside their venue.  We have set up a web site ‘Ferndown Dementia Friendly ‘to host local information.

We are setting up a stall in the town to create awareness amongst residents and businesses of dementia and how help can be provided.

Regular Dementia Friends sessions are now held at a local care home.

So far application to join has been carried out by word of mouth. With the Ferndown Dementia Friendly web site up and running a request for new members will also be made there. We are also looking at advertising in the local magazine.
