With 850,000 people with dementia across England and even more family and friends affected by it, we will lots of people living in North Hykeham with dementia.
That is why as the new Mayor of North Hykeham Town, I would like you to join me in building a Dementia Friendly Community.
Two thirds of people with dementia live in their community, but many feel lonely and isolated. That's why we need to make our communities dementia friendly so people living with dementia can lead the lives they want to and play a full role in society.
Dementia is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century, it is a progressive disease and a terminal condition, in fact it is now the leading killer of women.
There is no cure for Alzheimer's or any other type of dementia and that is why it is so important that we support people to live well with their dementia.
Anyone who lives and works within the North Hykeham Community can become involved and play an important role in supporting us to become a Dementia Friendly Town and make the lives better for people living in our town with dementia.
The Alzheimer's Society found out that the following activities are important to people living with dementia and that they need to be achievable either independently or with a carer.
- Being able to travel
- Going to the shops
- Running errands
- visiting places of worship
- managing day to day tasks
As a business in North Hykeham related to these activities you can play a big part in helping us become a Dementia Friendly Town
