Dementia Action Week event for Teignbridge DAA

Teignbridge DAA and Newton Abbot Library welcomes:

Sam Slater from Drink Wise Age Well@DWAW_UK    

 Health Surveys show that older adults now drink more on a weekly basis than younger adults and are more likely to drink every day.

Older adults are more likely to be treated successfully for an alcohol problem than younger adults. Visit the stand or attend Sam’s talk at 1400.

Kate Green, from the Town and GWR Museum/ Newton’s Place is bringing her Pop-up Museum – interactive, interesting and fun activities to promote memories and conversations. Reminiscence boxes also available to investigate.

Leanne and colleagues from Alzheimer’s Society with information and signposting

Nick Richards, accredited with the Society of Later Life Advisers(SOLLA), will be on hand. SOLLA is a not for profit organisation which aims to ensure that consumers are better informed about financial issues in later life and can find an accredited adviser. You can chat to Nick about topics like Wills, Lasting Power of Attorney, benefits and funding. 

Mary Austin from Devon Carers and Mary Sherwood from 4 Dementia Carers, will be running Drop-in sessions. If you are impacted by a person’s dementia, then come and have a chat. Mary Sherwood runs a local monthly Dementia Carer Network and delivers workshops to support those impacted by dementia. Find out about different stages of dementia; well-being and ill-being; reducing the risk of dementia; looking after yourself as a carer etc.

Two Dementia Friends sessions at the library – Wednesday 22nd1900 - 2000 and Friday 24th1300 – 1400. Free and interactive - learn how dementia affects a person and what you can do to make a difference. Join over 2 million people who have become Dementia Friends. Even small actions help – like being more patient in a shop queue or knowing how to communicate better. Anyone of any age can become a Dementia Friend. 

Jonathan Hanbury is founder of the Ness Centre- a dementia specialist hub in Teignmouth which offers outstanding day care, courses, home enabling and support for families and individuals with dementia and respite for their carers. Jonathan will be available from 1430.
