1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists a number of outcomes that we are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Our role would be to lobby within mental health planning systems for better services for people with dementia and their carers in Derby and Derbyshire, particularly those provided in the voluntary sector; to signpost organisations and individuals into existing services; to raise the awareness of dementia in the wider community through training, particularly Dementia Friend awareness.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Our challenges would be to obtain evidence of voluntary sector services that work effectively for people with dementia and their carers; to ensure adequate funding is delivered into social support; to finance the training and reach a wide audience, including those from BME communities.

2. Actions

  • Lobby for funding for dementia care projects

We will work alongside commissioners to highlight the need for effective voluntary sector services for people with dementia and their carers. We will promote service models which provide choice for the people who need them, and where they have a say and control of the services that are delivered.

    2014 - First Quarter Update

We have acted as a conduit for consultation on the new Derbyshire Dementia Strategy.

We have successfully lobbied for inclusion of voluntary sector dementia support services on the implementation groups for the strategy.

We are pleased that at our 2014 AGM a member of a local Alzheimer's Society service has joined our Executive Committee, giving us greater knowledge to feed into local commissioning around dementia services.

  • To signpost organisations and individuals into voluntary sector dementia care services

We will highlight the scope of existing dementia services to our membership and beyond by promoting regular updates on local dementia support services via our Forum News e-mail bulletins. We will also respond to telephone requests for information by signposting into these services. We will offer networking opportunities to dementia service providers at Forum meetings to enable them to promote their work and to find local partners for service delivery.

We continue to promote the activities and information about dementia services out to our membership through Forum News bulletins.

    2013 - Fourth Quarter Update

We presented on Dementia Friends awareness raising to the 4Es committee at Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation Trust and involved a range of local providers in discussions.

    2013 - Third Quarter Update

  • To deliver dementia friend awareness sessions to voluntary sector, statutory partners and the public in Derby and Derbyshire, with a focus on reaching BME communities

We have a trained Dementia Champion who has been commissioned to offer cascade training out to the wider health and voluntary sector community in Derby and Derbyshire. Training will initially target BME community organisations but we will respond to local needs to widen reach.

We have now delivered training to over 20 BME community organisations and also across CCGs and primary care. We have worked closely with the local Alzheimer's Socity to raise the awareness of further training for professional staff across all agencies.
