1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Ladder to the Moon uses creativity and innovation within development programmes to build enjoyable, vibrant cultures within care communities. We use coaching and learning through experience to stimulate confidence and encourage new ways of thinking, resulting in wellbeing focused support that leads to improved quality of life for both staff and residents, along with reduced costs and enhanced motivation. The focus of our work is in residential care settings, and increasingly in housing, working with staff so they are creating an enabling and supportive environment that values and understands the people they support, as well as the people that work there; and in which people living with a dementia have personal choice and control over decisions that effect them, at every stage of their life. We regularly present our approach in a very interactive way on local and national platforms, in order to transform perceptions of the amount of enjoyment, pleasure and happiness that can be experienced in dementia care, as well as sharing practical tools to achieving high levels of wellbeing.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The level of available resource for quality improvement. Overreliance in the industry on what we think is over intellectualised training -it's not about what you understand about dementia, it's about how you be with people living with dementia. Organisational cultures and structures that support task focused rather than person and relationship focused care. Access to key decision makers.
