1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We are all about helping people to live independently in their own homes. By assisting people with their hearing it helps to ensure they are living and communicating to the best of their abilities, making the most of any opportunities to interact and socialise with others and of course most importantly keeping them safe.

We want to make sure people have all the information and advice they need to make an informed choice about their hearing. As we are completely independent so can advise on the best hearing solutions for that individual looking at NHS and private option, as well as considering all the manufacturers and technology types most appropriate to them.

We are community based Audiologists carrying out our assessments at the most suitable location for that individual. We offer free home assessment which makes it very convenient and much less stressful especially if we are assisting an individual who has more complex needs such as dementia or physical difficulties. We are used to working with people who struggle with health and mental issues and also supporting people around them. We take a very holistic view of how we can best assist looking at the whole person not just their hearing.

We are built to collaborate and work with many other organisations to offer the very best service we can. We also assist with research and development to help understand and improve ways in which we help and support people who are affected by hearing loss.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The lack of hearing screening, awareness and early intervention.

The current delivery mechanism of hearing aids could be much more patient focused. More time spent on providing advice, support and rehabilitation would result in greater success with hearing aid wearers.

A greater understanding of what we are able to provide in the UK reducing the stigma attached to hearing and hearing solutions.

In the UK we need better information, advice, signposting and acces to services for anyone wanting to know more about their hearing.
