1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

All four  Fire Stations in the North Herts and Stevenage districts: Hitchin, Baldock & Letchworth, Royston and Stevenage , are committed to making their environments, staff and volunteers Dementia Friendly.  We are supporting the local community by joining the local Dementia Action Alliances.  We are looking into ways of making our fire stations and appliances Dementia Friendly and we are producing information materials that are inclusive of people living with Dementia, especially around being safe in the home and supporting independent living.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

We strive to be a fair and inclusive organisation, this brings challenges of ensuring all staff are conveying a standard message and delivering the same information.  We aim to make every contact count, this means we need to have the time and resources to do so, daily operational needs can influence this and additional resources such as volunteers help us to meet these needs.

2. Actions

  • Dementia Friends Training

Deliver dementia friends training to all district staff

  • Communicate our Dementia awareness to the community.

We aim to publicise to the community that our staff on Fire Stations and Fire Appliances are trained and will provide safe places for people living with Dementia.  We will welcome those people and assist where possible.

  • Developing Dementia Friendly Literature

To simplify and ensure that literature on keeping safe is easily accessable and understandable to people living with Dementia.  We aim to encourage and support independant living and providing support to those needing advice.
