Dementia Adventure

Dementia Adventure is an evidence-led charity and social enterprise based in Essex, United Kingdom, working nationally and internationally (e.g., USA and Belgium), with a following in over 130 countries. As a charitable trust, we empower people to live better with dementia alongside our innovative and pioneering work to bring about positive change in the social sector. Our Vision: Dementia Adventure has a vision of society in which people live well with dementia, have contact and connection with nature, and enjoy a sense of adventure. A society where people enjoy a full range of activities, have strong relationships with people in their communities and have access to places connected to their interests, passions and dreams. Our Mission: Is to enable people living with dementia to get outdoors, connect with nature, themselves and their community, and retain a sense of adventure in their lives.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

We deliver nature based adventures as well as providing training, research and consultancy services.  We help deliver the outcomes for people with dementia and their carers by providing innovative services which enable people to have more choice and control over their lives.  Our work is grounded in research evidence and shared using multi-media. We have created a community of supporters who value our nature based approach, because it creates a sense of belonging and provides meaningful activity. Our training work enables people living in care settings to connect with nature and our research work is building the evidence base for the benefits of green exercise and dementia. Our consultancy services, provided by Neil Mapes and a team of project leaders, bring a fresh approach to considering how to continually improve dementia services. Our website enables us to reach people living with dementia in over 20 countries and is a leading voice in creating a more positive narrative about what it means to live well with dementia. 

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Dementia Adventure feels that there are a number of challenges involved in delivering the outcomes.  Firstly, there is a lack of research evidence regarding the importance of nature in enabling people to live well with dementia.  Secondly, while training is regularly named as something which is needed for staff and other people caring for and supporting people with dementia, often there are inadequate budgets and many organisations lack the support to truly empower their staff to provide excellent dementia care.  Thirdly, direct payments, one of the ways in which many people living with dementia can have more choice and control over their lives, have had very low uptake and many barriers remain.  Finally, many people are still struggling to move from ‘doing to’ to ‘doing with’ people with dementia.  We actively support the call to action 'Dementia Words' to move from a language of ‘suffering’ to a language of thriving and living well with dementia.

    Development and expansion of Social Licence – building on the successful work in Scotland, revising and expanding the training and support we provide through licenced partners.

    Developing and expanding our holiday provision planning the expansion from our 50th holiday to our 150th and beyond, including both tailor-made or bespoke holidays as well as a more diverse and extensive brochure of off the shelf holidays

    Developing and further refining our understanding of the cost/benefit and associated business and financial modelling of a located DA Centre – seeking funding, investment and partners to recruit and support a Project Manager to bring our dreams and plans on paper to fruition.
