Disabled Go

DisabledGo is an accessibility checker for the UK, providing detailed access information to thousands of different places to visit all over the UK. Every place is visited and assessed in person by a trained DisabledGo surveyor so you can really trust the information. All sorts of places are included in the guide including leisure centres, libraries, shops, hotels and restaurants. The accessibility of each venue is looked at from a pan disability perspective to ensure the resource is useful for everyone. Best of all the information is all available on www.disabledgo.com and is totally free to access.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

DisabledGo helps people who feel isolated or cut off from their community by removing fear of the unknown. By giving disabled people access information to places they would like to visit they are more likely to actually plan a visit because there are no worries about whether or not the place will be accessible. For example, going from worrying about whether or not you can park your adapted vehicle close to the entrance, whether there is an accessible toilet, whether signage is clear, or if the floors have reflective surfaces, to knowing the answers to all of these questions and more before you plan your visit can be truly life changing. In particular, carers have been utilising DisabledGo since its conception in 2000 to plan days out and trips to different places, where before they would simply be too frightened to try new places for fear of them being inaccessible and therefore a wasted trip.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

One challenge for us is to ensure that the guides provide the right sort of information to help people with dementia to access different places and in order to overcome this we need to consult with relevant organisations like the DAA on what sort of information we should be providing. Other challenges for DisabledGo are mostly financial as it is an expensive process to visit and assess thousands of places every year, not to mention the cost of maintaining the resource and ensuring the information is correct and up to date. DisabledGo relies on funding from our local authority partners to provide this information and due to budget cuts it is becoming increasingly more difficult to obtain sufficient funding to keep the information online and available.

2. Actions

  • Improve our understanding of what information is useful for people with dementia when it comes to accessibility

    DisabledGo’s partnership team will consult with relevant organisations to find out what information is relevant to individuals living with dementia, their families and carers and the best format to present the information so that it is easily understood.
