1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Raising Staff Awareness of the Needs of People Living with Dementia

a) We would like people living with Dementia and their carers to feel supported within our store, when visiting to shop or when using our hospitality facilities.  We would like them to feel welcomed and able to trust that each Partner they meet will be helpful and supportive.

 b) We will support Partners (members of staff) who are caring for people living with dementia.

To provide a Dementia Friendly Shopping and Dining Experience for Customers

For Partners who have attended the Sessions and signed up to becoming Dementia Friends to be more aware and proactive in providing a dementia friendly service and shopping environment.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Our aim is to run awareness sessions for as many Partners as possible.  This may be difficult given the many other commitments and different shift patterns Partners have within store.  However because of the importance of this, we have trained four Partners as Dementia Friend Champions and so we hope that we will be able to provide all necessary information sessions now and in the future.

2. Actions

  • Support Community Dementia Awareness Events

John Lewis philosophy is supporting our community and Exeter Branch will continue making an active effort to, as much as possible, support local events that focus on living with dementia.

During Dementia Awareness Weeks in both 2016 and 2017 we hosted an in house event to which Exeter Dementia Action Alliance, the Alzheimer’s Society and Devon Alzheimer’s were invited. This provided them with the space and opportunity to speak directly to a wider group of the general public and partners.
