Etherstone Day Centre (Wigan Council)

Etherstone offers a day service for people over the age of 50. We offer support to people living with Dementia or other complex health needs. We aim to help people to stay healthy and independent by offering therapeutic and stimulating activities in a safe environment or in the local and wider community. We are fully committed to the principles of supporting all people of the Borough to age well. The Centre is open Monday – Friday 9.00am-4.30pm providing 35 day care places per day. Etherstone also offers a weekend critical service on both Saturday and Sunday from 9.30am – 3.30pm. Etherstone is a single story building located close to Leigh town centre.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Etherstone day centre ensures that the support individuals receive is person centered and meets the agreed outcomes for the individual.

We offer activities that aim to promote health and wellbeing, ensuring we take positive risk to eliminate potential barriers.

Etherstone offers a safe and secure environment for people living with Dementia or complex health needs. We have a highly trained staff team who are committed to further develop their knowledge and skills.

Our aim is to become a Dementia Friendly Community Hub for not only the individuals we supports but also for residents of the local and wider community.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The local community not wanting to get involved due to their lack of knowledge and understanding of those living with Dementia.

Transport can be a barrier to supporting individuals to access their local and wider community.

Ensuring that support plans are person centered identifying wishes, aspirations and outcomes for the person living dementia.
