Key Training Academy Ltd

We are a training company dedicated to Continuous Professional Development for those working within the Health & Social Care sector. As well as a wide range of other courses, we have developed our own CPD Accredited Dementia Awareness Training, which is extremely popular, and draws on best practice given by the Alzheimer's Society. All our staff and trainers are 'Dementia Friends' and we are committed to the advancement of care and support of those with Dementia, and enhancement of the knowledge of those entrusted with their care.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Our Training Academy has developed its own CPD Accredited Dementia Awareness Course, which is extremely popular and well received, and operates at a National level to deliver best practice knowledge, awareness and training for those interested in finding out more about Dementia and supporting those with the condition. As 'Dementia Friends', all our staff and trainers promote best practice principles and are committed to the care and support of those with the condition, both during work and in their own time.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

Many staff and trainers within our organisation have their own ideas of ways to support those with Dementia, with all of them probably being correct in some form. In liaison with the Alzheimer's Society, being 'Dementia Friends', being members of local alliances, and sharing practice with care and support workers on a daily basis, we are continually adapting and embracing new ideas but this has the result of our Dementia Training syllabus evolving regularly. Keeping track of these changes can be a challenge for the administrators who deal with updating the lesson plans, and the trainers responsible for keeping the course content concise, but we believe this evolution is essential.

2. Actions

  • Raising Awareness

We will raise awareness of the condition for all the care and support workers, and members of the community, who are trained by us to develop them to become 'Dementia Friendly'.

  • Sharing Best Practice

We will continually evolve our training materials by sharing best practice with our care and support workers who are "on the coal face" of supporting those with Dementia.  Our training will reflect the ongoing needs of those with the condition, and knowledge that we discover will be reflected in our training.

  • Accessibility to Training

We will continue to keep the costs of our CPD Accredited Dementia Awareness Training low and investigate ways for this to expand to other localities across the UK (current training takes place in Lancashire, Manchester, Shropshire and North Wales)
