The George Inn

The George Inn is a very traditional village pub, family owned and run for eight years it has evolved to become the heart of Denby, not just as a meeting place for residents and visitors from further afield, a place to gather to mark births, deaths and marriages, but also as the centre of village events, conservation and fundraising throughout the year. We can help to support people living with dementia, their families and carers from the surrounding area by providing a safe local environment, with a warm welcome, enabling them to enjoy the time old tradition of a drink down at the pub, and socialising within the community. The team here at The George will be made aware of the challenges caused by dementia and strive to provide the best service possible to make the experience as enjoyable as possible.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The team will need to be made aware of the effects of dementia and the challenges that can arise on a day to day basis.

The general attitude of the team and also of other customers that may affect the way people are treated.

The George is an 18thcentury Inn and as such is a very old building with some additions made in the late 60’s. Some elements, such as access, will be difficult, if not impossible to change.  The general lighting is also subdued.  Some elements which may cause problems can easily be overcome, such as clearer signage at the entrances and toilet facilities.

2. Actions

  • To raise awareness of dementia

In the first instance we will arrange a face to face dementia friends awareness session for all team members.  For staff that who are unable to attend the session we will direct then to the online dementia friends awareness session.  We will also encourage further learning and participation via the online learning resources such as SCIE and Kirklees Council Dementia Friendly Toolkits

Staff will also have access to information provided in KDAA Dementia Friendly High Street Pack

Raise awareness of dementia with the local community by hosting a dementia friends awareness session for community members.
