The Beacon

The Beacon is a community centre for the people of Exeter. We want to make our centre a safe haven for anyone with memory loss or early dementia and their carers. We would like people to feel welcome and comfortable here, where the staff and volunteers have some understanding of their needs and the challenges that are faced. Where possible we will empower our visitors to make their own choices, to fully participate in gatherings and be socially active. We will work with those organisations serving people with dementia through hosting or promoting their work whenever practical.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Action 1: Equipping staff to meet the needs of people with early dementia.

We have organised a training session for our centre staff with a specialised speaker and a receptionist has attended a Dementia Friends information session. Our aim is to be positive, encouraging and able to support those with memory loss when they come here, for whatever reason.

Action 2: Empowering people  with dementia to be comfortable in our centre.

To improve signage, put up a clock, have a programme of events on display, improve our “grounding” message.

Action 3: Hosting activities specifically tailored to people with dementia.

A weekly session of the Meet and Remember Group meets at the centre. The Group aims to reduce isolation and reinforce memories and through stimulating talk, singing and social activities. The group welcomes those with dementia and their carers to take part and offers them a nourishing meal.

Action 4: Raising awareness in the wider community.

We are hoping to hold an event as part of Dementia Awareness Week 2016.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

 There are many people from all different backgrounds coming to the centre. Raising awareness of the needs of those of us with dementia for our staff, volunteers and visitors, will be a challenge. 

The centre caters for a wide range of people of various ages and it is important to be available for all the differing needs of the many different groups that use it, whilst keeping within limited funding.

We believe that if we make the centre more dementia friendly, other individuals with different life circumstances may well benefit from these measures too. Having a sensitive and responsive centre will enhance the sense of well-being within our community.
