Bluebird Care (Medway) employs local care assistants to provide a complete range of domiciliary home care services to customers throughout the Medway towns and surrounding area. We specialise in providing dementia care, hospice at home, personal care, medication, cognitive rehabilitation and companionship.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Our primary aim is to demonstrate our support for the initiative and lead by way of example. We have a wealth of valuable knowledge and experience which we wish to share with others. We have strong and well established links within the local community and directly to individuals touched by Dementia. Through sharing their experiences with us either of their own volition or in response to enquiries we make we are able tailor our Care service to meet those needs directly and share that information with other stakeholders.

We take feedback at all events we run and by way of regular Customer feedback surveys to supplement the information we gather regarding local needs. Our monthly events arose as a result of a need we identified for such social engagement opportunities within the community.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

We review our performance in terms of the number of enquiries we receive for our services and information requested along with attendance at our events. Based upon this information we then tailor future plans and information to ensure the need that we are told exists is met. 

2. Actions

  • Continue to promote an awareness that it is possible to live well with dementia for both the individual with the diagnosis and their families.

    All staff that joins Bluebird Care (Medway) will be trained in understanding dementia and given the opportunity to become dementia friends. Our dementia desk will continue to assist in providing information on local resources that are available. We will continue to utilise our social media and marketing outlets to provide essential news and information from partner and relevant sources.

  • Support local events, organisations and individuals in their own plans and actions to drive the dementia initiative.

    Through our sponsorship and promotion activities we will support and sign post the events and actions of the existing and future members of the DAA and in particular the plans to qualify Medway as a dementia friendly community.

  • Increase awareness of and attendance at our monthly Beating Isolation and Dementia events in Medway and expand our Care Assistant training to offer the same experiences and knowledge beyond our staff.

    We have seen a steady growth in attendance at these monthly events and the feedback that we have been given after each has been very positive. The common thread we hear repeatedly is that had they known about it sooner they would have loved to have joined us beforehand.

    Word of mouth is an essential means of raising awareness but at a slow pace. We will actively promote these events at every opportunity with the aim of increasing them to two per month within 6 months and beyond as demand for them increases.
