First Call (Support at Home) Service, British Red Cross

We are a free service providing short term practical and emotional support at home for up to 12 weeks to help people regain their independence. We do this by providing: support post hospital discharge, or assisting people to remain at home. We offer: companionship and social visits by our staff and volunteers, support with practical tasks including shopping and signposting to other organisations for additional support. We are not able to provide personal care, however can help source organisations that do this. After the 12 weeks, if you require any further support, the service team will help them access this working with other organisations.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

The First Call Service is available to anyone.  We will accept referrals from individuals, family members, friends, neighbours, adult social care, hospitals and other health care and voluntary sector professionals.  We can offer people with dementia and their carers companionship and support with practical tasks including light housework and shopping.  Whilst we offer this support, we will continually signpost to other organisations that can offer the ongoing support they may need.  Our trained staff and volunteers have local knowledge of our area which will enable our service users to get involved with other local organisations that are able to offer continuous help and support.

Our involvement with this alliance will help us achieve new partnerships within our local communities enabling us to be fully equipped with all the information needed to help our service users regain their independence.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

To deliver our services to our local community, we need to have volunteers who are willing to go through a three day induction programme, deliver our values and follow our fundamental principles.  Volunteer recruitment is challenging as there are so many volunteering opportunities in various organisations within our area.

We also need to plan our involvement with the Dementia Action Alliance to ensure that our ongoing service delivery continues as normal while we work towards the action plan goals that we set.

2. Actions

  • All our staff and volunteers become Dementia Friends

We are already very proactive in encouraging the First Call volunteers to become dementia friends, however we definitely need to encourage all of our volunteers from all services to become dementia friends.

    Delivery

  • We will support our staff and volunteers to undertake training to be Dementia Champions

This will give us more opportunities to achieve Action one.  If we have more staff and volunteers that can deliver the Dementia Friends training – we will be able to achieve our ultimate goal of making as many people as possible aware.

    Status:

    2016 - First Quarter Update

    Planning

  • Have a representative that attends the Dementia Action Alliance Meetings regularly

This will ensure that we are kept up to date with how we can contribute to ensuring the Dementia Action Alliance within our area is beneficial.
