Home Instead Senior Care - Chesterfield

Home Instead Senior Care Chesterfield provides support to enable adults and older people to retain their independence and remain living in their own homes for as long as possible. We provide a range of services for individuals including companionship, home-help and personal care to assist and support people to live as independently as possible in the place they feel most comfortable and secure, at home. Our main role is to deliver quality home care to allow people to remain living independently in their own home. Our support is tailored to suit the needs of the client as an individual’s situation changes and is flexible so that it can change with the clients’ changing requirements.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Wherever possible our clients have personal choice and control over decisions and we ensure that at all times we communicate effectively with the client and their family about their support, health and well-being. We believe that we can only deliver the right care if we build a relationship with our clients so we aim to support clients with the same regular CAREGivers whom spend a minimum of one hour at each visit and are matched to the clients with the same hobbies and interests. We are rolling out our own Home Instead City & Guilds Alzheimer’s and other Dementias CARE (changing ageing through research and education) programme to all our caregivers. This training is also being rolled out in the form of family and community workshops in the Chesterfield area. The training focuses on understanding the disease, knowing the person behind the dementia and learning techniques to handle the many different behaviours associated with the disease. We hope to educate society and change opinions and views both on a local level and at a national level with the Home Instead network.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The challenge for Home Instead Chesterfield is that it is difficult for us to make potential clients aware of how different we are in how we train our staff and how we deliver our support if they have never before had to look for care. It is only once clients and families experience other care providers or have a personal recommendation do they understand how we deliver support for the whole person. We will continue to raise awareness about our approach to dementia care for people living at home. It is highly attractive once experienced, but presently less well known than the ‘task based’ options we reject. We will also continue to raise the bar in terms of caregiver continuing education e.g. encouraging more caregivers to go through our full in-house City and Guilds Accredited dementia training.

2. Actions

  • To change the face of ageing through knowledge and education

We intend to change the face of ageing and the ever growing issue of dementia through our dementia workshops based on our own city and guilds accredited training which will be implemented and rolled out to our CAREGivers and, eventually, across the community reaching a variety of people and all of society. Workshops will be customised and targeted for caregiver, family and community creating a continuous flow of workshops throughout the year thereby creating positive and influential outcomes.
