Active Minds

Active Minds develops and sells a range of award winning activity products specifically developed for people living with dementia. Active Minds is dedicated to improving the quality of life of the 35 million people living with dementia worldwide. By providing a more active and enjoyable environment, Active Minds hopes to alleviate some of the problems of isolation, boredom and frustration so common with dementia.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists seven outcomes that the DAA are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Active Minds develops and sells a range of activity products which aim to improve the quality of life of those with dementia, and their carers. Products are designed to help both parties engage with one another, learn and understand more about one another, and help to combat signs of boredom, isolation and depression often associated with dementia. Products are designed to ensure that people at all stages of dementia have access to affordable and appropriate activities. 

Products are designed to help improve health in a number of ways such as improving cognition, dexterity, mobility, engagement and communication.

Active Minds regularly asks for feedback from its clients and each year conducts a Social Impact Survey, surveying 100+ clients to ensure those with dementia and their carers have their views and opinions listened to and considered. This in turn helps the company to improve its products and continue to provide valuable support to its clients. The company takes great care and pride in the inclusiveness of its offer, ensuring that carers also feel supported and respected and a dialogue is kept open with both carer/ client and end user. Continued research and development, including clinical trials will be commissioned and conducted by Active Minds so that those with dementia and their carers can feel confident that the best products and services are being developed/ improved.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

The challenges faced by Active Minds to deliver these outcomes include:

Funding research, training carers and/ care home teams to get the maximum benefits from Active Minds’ products for their clients, finding time and funding for further product development, communication of products’ key benefits and the range of benefits that suitable activities can offer those with dementia and accurately measuring the positive effect that products can have on a person’s Quality of Life

2. Actions

  • Further trials of the products to determine their benefits

    Active Minds, in partnership with Medway Community Healthcare, Provide and Imperial College Healthcare to demonstrate the range of benefits to health and well-being that dementia activity products can provide by conducting a series of trials, studies and other research to help answer questions such as: What are the most appropriate activity products for people at various stages of dementia? Can activities such as those designed and produced by Active Minds help to reduce behavioural problems, improve mood and an individual’s Quality of Life?

    2015 - Second Quarter Update

    Trails with all three organisations are currently in progress and in the process of recording the findings. It is expected this will run until June 2015 where we will analyse the data and share the results.

  • Use learning from the trials and other research results to refine and develop new and existing products.

    Active Minds will use results from trials, customer feedback, impact survey and other research to refine it's product development process and define a model for best practice. To ensure that existing products and any products developed in the future, provide as many benefits to the end user as possible and help the company to refine its communications, and any of its supporting material.

    2015 - Second Quarter Update

    The Active Minds design team is roughly half way through refining its model for their product development process. They expect to compete this in June in time for the next round of product development and intend to share the process publically so other business can benefit from their learning’s.

  • Share the results of our research and trials with other organisations and the public

    As part of Active Minds’ dedication to all of those in the dementia community, including its healthcare associations and other relevant bodies, the results of any research and trials conducted by Active Minds will be reported on and shared in the public domain to help support others and encourage conversations and debate in regards to improvements and best practise.

    Data from trials is still being collected so little progess has been made on this action. We are lining up speaking slots at trade events later in the year to begin sharing our research and incites.
