Derbyshire Carers Association

Derbyshire Carers Association is a registered charity providing support, advice, information and signposting, in many different formats, to unpaid / informal Carers living in Derbyshire. We reduce the stress and isolation experienced by Carers as a result of their often demanding day to day caring role, helping to maintain and improve their health and wellbeing so that they are able to continue to care for their family member of friend who is disabled due to a physical or mental impairment or by age.

1. Action Plan

1. The National Dementia Declaration lists a number of outcomes that we are seeking to achieve for people with dementia and their carers. How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers?

Derbyshire Carers Association give choice and control to family carers of people with dementia so they are able to determine how their care plan is shaped, adopting a self-centred and co-production approach to how they and their cared for live a full and meaningful life.

Our trained staff will continue to signpost family carers to other relevant supporting health and social care avenues related to offering professional and up to date support and advice regarding dementia, plus other voluntary support organisations, i.e. Alzheimer’s Society, Making Space, Parkinson’s Society, Crossroads and more.

We will raise awareness and therefore improve the understanding of dementia through all our existing medium forms, including website, at Support Groups, Training, newsletters, social media, all Carer Events, and literature.

Our front line staff will continue as registered Dignity Champions. Our organisation currently holds the Bronze Derbyshire County Council Dignity & Respect award and will work towards gaining the Silver accreditation.

Through our Carers Voice and Carers as Ambassadors forum networks, we will enable the engagement of stakeholders and carers of people with dementia, empowering them with the opportunity to make their voices heard resulting in their views being fed into the local and national Dementia Strategy.

2. What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation?

How we break down the misconceptions of dementia, convincing family carers and the person they care that they can continue to live a meaningful and fulfilled live

Ensuring family carers of people with dementia are supported as soon as possible either at the point of diagnosis or before.

Reaching these family carers offering the support and advice they critically need with restrictive funding available, therefore shaping a service delivery model fit for purpose.

2. Actions

  • Improving outdoor spaces and resources to support way finding and orientation within four DCC Homes in Derbyshire for older people

Derbyshire Carers Association have been commissioned to project lead improvement work within four residential homes in Derbyshire to improve signage, way finding, orientation and outdoor spaces so that the lives of people with dementia are enhanced.

We will engage and consult with people with dementia and their carers so they play a major part of how these improvements are made, asking what artwork or outdoor features stimulate specific enjoyable past memories.

We will work to provide sustainability of the improvements through partnership work with other voluntary organisations and schools/youth groups.
