Crediton Dementia Action Alliance

History

In November, 2012 the Crediton Branch of the Devon Senior Voice approached Crediton's two Rotary Clubs to see whether the clubs would join with them to make Crediton a dementia-friendly town. Presentations from REPoD were given at both Rotary clubs and subsequently representatives went to Tavistock, already working towards a dementia-friendly town, to meet Tony Parker and attend an open meeting. A small steering group was set up, consisting of members of Senior Voice, the Rotary Clubs, and an Alzheimer's Society Volunteer.  We now meet at the Café where a Memory Café will be established.

Aims

  •  Increase awareness and understanding of dementia
  • Establish a network of shops, local businesses, town organisations including schools, committed to understanding more about dementia and supporting people with dementia and their carers where possible
  • Establish links with those already supporting people with dementia and their carers
  • Signpost people with dementia and their carers to where they may be able to find help and support in the town/area.

We decided to do this by:

  • Identifying local needs of people with dementia and their carers
  • Inviting shops, businesses and town organisations to share our aims
  • Providing awareness raising opportunities and briefing to shops, businesses and their staff such as Dementia Friends
  • Holding a dementia-friendly awareness day
  • Assisting in establishing a Memory Café

Meetings

The Alliance holds a general meeting at the Crediton Stations Tea Rooms once a quarter, open to representatives of all local organisations whose work brings them into contact with people with dementia and their carers. The committee also meets on an ad hoc basis for other matters e.g. Awareness Day planning
