South Derbyshire Launch February 2016

People from across the private, public and voluntary sectors have gathered to share ideas on how South Derbyshire can become a ‘Dementia Friendly Community.’

Around 60 guests gathered at Swadlincote’s Oakland Village on the 24th of February with a view to establishing a ‘Dementia Action Alliance’, a group that will help to set out how the status will be achieved.

The South Derbyshire scheme was initiated by community groups including Swadlincote Town Team and South Derbyshire CVS as well as local businesses such as Timms Solicitors, and is being supported by both South Derbyshire District Council and Derbyshire County Council.

Gill Collins, from the Alzheimer’s Society, gave a presentation and 23 people also took part in a ‘Dementia Friends’ awareness session’.

South Derbyshire DAA

The South Derbyshire Dementia Action Alliance is made up of a group of organisations and individuals who have come together with the aim of making South Derbyshire a better place to live for people with dementia and their carers.

Anyone with an interest and commitment to improving the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers can join the South Derbyshire Dementia Action Alliance. This could be in a traditional healthcare setting, public health, local business or a voluntary organisation which play a part in the prevention, care and support of people who have Dementia. It is also open to people with Dementia, their carers, family and friends.

The Dementia Action Alliance seeks to grow and nurture a supportive and inspirational network. Members of the Alliance will get the chance to connect with a wide range of professionals, share and draw on expertise and help to support others. Members have to align to the National Dementia Declaration and complete an action plan. This is really simple to do and not meant to deter anyone from joining.

Come along to find out more about our work and how you can get involved!

The next meeting of the South Derbyshire Dementia Action Alliance will take place on Tuesday 6th September 2:00-4:00pm at South Derbyshire District Council, Civic Way, Swadlincote, Derbyshire, DE11 0AH.
